Step 1: Decode the Cleaning Tag

Before you touch the fabric with water or soap, look for the manufacturer’s care label (usually tucked under the seat cushion). It will have a specific code that acts as your roadmap:

  • W: You can safely use water-based cleaning agents.

  • S: Strictly use water-free solvents or dry-cleaning products. Water will leave permanent rings here!

  • S/W: You’re in luck. You can use either water or solvents.

  • X: Vacuum only. No liquids at all. Leave these to the professional cleaners.

Step 2: Vacuum Away the Dust

Grime and crumbs act like sandpaper on fabric fibres, wearing them down over time. Grab your vacuum cleaner and attach the upholstery brush tool. Run it firmly across the backrest, the seat, and deeply into the crevices where crumbs love to hide.

Step 3: Mix Your Gentle Cleaning Solution

Assuming your chair tag says W or S/W, you don’t need harsh chemicals.

  • Mix 4 cups of warm water with 1 tablespoon of clear, liquid dish soap.

  • Whisk it together until it creates a nice, thick foam.

Crucial Rule: Always spot-test your mixture on a hidden part of the chair to make sure the fabric doesn’t bleed or change colour.

Step 4: Blot, Don’t Scrub

Dip a clean, white microfibre cloth into the suds rather than soaking it in the liquid. Gently blot the fabric, starting from the top of the chair and working your way down.

If you are dealing with a specific stain, work from the outside of the spot inward so you don’t accidentally spread it. Never scrub aggressively, as this can distort the fabric weave and push the dirt deeper into the cushion.

Step 5: Wipe and Dry

Dampen a fresh microfiber cloth with plain water, wring it out completely, and give the chair a final swipe to remove any residual soap. Finally, let the chair air dry completely.
